Passive Design

Randall Millennium Homes are designed with care to take maximum advantage of seasonal changes in solar altitude. The relationship of roof overhang to south window placement and the projection of the SIP wall beyond the foundation to south window placement have been calculated to maximize passive solar heating in winter while minimizing influx of solar energy during the summer. The solar shading renderings show the sharp contrast between seasonal extremes.

The use of precast concrete hollow core plank deck for first floor is closely related to this passive solar heating. The mass of the concrete is calculated to absorb the incoming solar energy into its considerable thermal mass, warming only a few degrees and later slowly releasing that energy as radiant heat over several hours. A similar home with wood frame floor construction would experience overheating during the late morning and afternoon, followed by a sharp drop in temperature after sundown.
